The strategic role of Regulatory Operations in digital transformation success

Abstract

The Regulatory Operations (Reg Ops) function is emerging as a strategic leader of digital transformation, moving beyond compliance oversight to shape enterprise-wide technology direction and enablement. With a deep understanding of regulatory data, processes and health authority expectations, Reg Ops is uniquely positioned to steer the strategic adoption of AI, automation and structured content approaches, building future-ready regulatory capabilities and delivering meaningful value.

This article illustrates how Reg Ops not only directs the strategic vision for digital enablement but also drives its practical implementation, championing initiatives that apply natural language processing (NLP), predictive analytics, robotic process automation (RPA) and large language model (LLM)-based authoring tools across the regulatory lifecycle.

The article includes a case study from Syneos Health, which exemplifies this end-to-end role. It shows how the Reg Ops function led the co-creation of generative AI solutions for patient narratives, chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) stability data extraction and plain language summaries by evolving team structures, upskilling in product development and technology, and collaborating closely with key stakeholders. This blend of strategic direction, operational ownership and technology-enabled delivery yielded significant efficiencies, including an 83% reduction in document preparation time and up to 80% fewer manual data handling/transcription errors, alongside faster adoption.

Ultimately, the article reinforces how Reg Ops is not merely influencing transformation; it is designing, building and embedding the AI-enabled future of regulatory practice.
